A/B testing for outfitters: simple experiments that increase bookings

You’ve got traffic coming to your website. Some of those visitors book trips. Most don’t. The question is whether small changes to your pages could turn more of those browsers into customers. A/B testing for your outdoor recreation website is how you find out, and you don’t need a big budget or a data science degree to do it.
An A/B test is simple: show half your visitors one version of a page and the other half a different version. See which one gets more bookings. Keep the winner. That’s it. The concept is simple even if the marketing world has made it sound complicated. For a rafting outfitter or fishing guide, even one test that bumps your booking rate by a percentage point or two can mean dozens of extra trips per season.
What to test first
You could test anything on your site, but not everything matters equally. Start with the pages and elements closest to the booking decision. That’s where small changes produce the biggest results.
Your trip page headlines. The headline is the first thing someone reads after clicking through from Google. “Half-Day Rafting Trip” is functional but flat. “Half-day whitewater adventure on the Nantahala — no experience needed” tells the visitor more and speaks to their hesitation. Test two different headlines for a month and see which page converts better.
The call-to-action button. “Book Now” is standard. But is it the best option for your visitors? “Reserve Your Spot” or “Check Availability” might perform differently. A tour operator in the travel space tested different CTA wording and found that lowering the perceived commitment — “Check Dates” instead of “Book Now” — increased clicks by over 10%. Your results will vary, but this is a five-minute change worth testing.
Hero images. Your trip pages probably have a big photo at the top. Test an action shot (raft mid-rapid) against a scenic shot (calm river at sunset) against a people shot (smiling family after the trip). One tour company found that moving a trip video to the top of the page improved desktop conversions by 6%. What visitors see first shapes whether they keep reading.
Pricing display. Should you show prices on the trip page or make people click through to see them? Testing by a tour operator showed that displaying pricing upfront increased conversion rates by about 5%. Most outfitters hide pricing behind a “Contact Us” button, which adds friction. Test putting the price right on the page.
Form length. If your booking starts with a form, how many fields does it have? Name, email, phone, date, group size, experience level, how they heard about you, special requests. Every field is a chance for someone to abandon the process. Test a short form (name, email, date, group size) against your current one. You might be surprised how much a two-field reduction helps.
How to run tests without expensive tools
The enterprise A/B testing platforms cost hundreds per month and are built for sites with millions of visitors. You don’t need them.
VWO’s free plan covers basic A/B testing for sites up to 50,000 monthly visitors. It has a visual editor: click on an element, change it, and VWO splits the traffic for you. No coding required. For most outfitters, this is more than enough.
Google Tag Manager with GA4 lets you run basic tests by randomly assigning visitors to different page versions using custom JavaScript. It’s free and it’s what you’re probably already using for analytics. The setup is more technical than VWO, but there are step-by-step tutorials for it.
The manual approach works too, especially for seasonal businesses. Run version A of your trip page for two weeks during a consistent traffic period, then swap to version B for two weeks. Compare booking rates. It’s not scientifically rigorous, but for a site getting 1,000 visitors a month, it’s often the most practical option. Perfect data isn’t the goal. Better decisions are.
Realistic expectations for small operators
Most A/B testing advice assumes you have tens of thousands of visitors per month. You probably don’t, and that’s fine.
With lower traffic, your tests take longer to produce clear results. A page getting 500 visitors a month might need six to eight weeks to show a meaningful difference between two versions. That’s okay. You’re not a SaaS company shipping weekly experiments. You’re running one or two tests per season, keeping the winners, and gradually improving.
Don’t chase tiny percentage differences. If version A converts at 2.1% and version B converts at 2.3%, that’s probably noise at low traffic volumes. Look for bigger swings, like a change that moves your rate from 2% to 3% or higher. Those are real, and they compound.
Focus on one test at a time. Changing your headline, hero image, and CTA button simultaneously means you won’t know which change made the difference. Change one thing, measure, move on.
Five tests worth running this season
If you’ve never tested anything on your site, here’s where to start. Pick one. Run it for a month. See what happens.
Test your trip page headline. Write a more specific, benefit-focused version and run it against the current one.
Test showing prices on the trip page versus hiding them behind a button or “Contact Us” link.
Test a shorter booking form. Remove every field that isn’t essential to completing the reservation.
Test your hero image. Swap your current photo for the best action shot from last season.
Test adding a guest review or testimonial directly on the trip page, near the booking button.
Each of these takes less than an hour to set up. None costs anything. And any one of them could be the difference between a decent season and your best season yet.
Your website is a booking engine
The whole point of your site is to turn visitors into guests. A/B testing is just a structured way to figure out what helps that happen. You don’t need to test everything. You don’t need fancy tools. You need to pick the page that matters most (usually your top trip page), change one thing, and pay attention to the results.
Most outdoor businesses never run a single test. They guess what works, stick with whatever their web designer built three years ago, and leave bookings on the table. Running even one or two experiments per season puts you ahead of nearly all of them.
Start with the element closest to the booking button. Make one change to a trip page that isn’t converting. Measure it. Go from there.
